Training 10-15 minutes, three times a day

If you have any doubts about how effective short training sessions are, check this out:

According to workingaussiesource.com, Jay Sisler trained for 10-15 minutes, three times a day. He worked on just one thing at a time, trying not to confuse the dog. If the dog wasn't getting something, he would stop working on that trick for "a month or two" then come back to it.

How good was that part where Sisler and his three dogs jumped rope together?

This was a great ol' clip. Some of these old time trainers were smarter then the average bear you see today, the ones who think they can train a dog in a day. I worked for one of the greats Frank Inn, he started out with an injury also. I never saw a man so big able to move like he did. He was a Clicker trainer before they called it that.
When I train I keep in mind how Frank would start with just little stuff and short encounters, he could train many dogs in one day and have many dogs knowing basics so that when a movie came up the dogs were ready to learn the script. A friend of mine and I used to tell people we trained dogs 5 minutes at a time, but in reality, a dog that lived with me might get 5 minutes all day for the first 2 or 3 days depending on the issue. Walking through the yard he was in, was in fact a training session. If he kept all feet on the ground he got some attention and food!
My little Border Terrier is a work-a-holic! he will work for 1/2 hour and still beg for more! I started him at 10 wks and he is 6 years this month. His 15 yr. old sibling (a JRT x BC x Heeler) was the same way. I have to put all the props and clickers and bait bags away or they will continue to throw behavior at me! I think Jay and Frank's way of training is how dogs learn work is fun. It keeps spirit high, energy is channeled and no harm is inflicted. Punishment is: not rewarding the dog instead of, scaring him or using pain to alter behavior. These were men who more should know. Frank wasn't a hero, just a good animal person. RIP Frank Inn.
Thanks for a great little ezine!
