Intelligence of Domestic Dogs

Aidan's picture

A nice video from National Geographic on the intelligence of domestic dogs:

I'm not sure that I would draw some of the same conclusions that were drawn in the experiments early in the clip, but they did demonstrate something about what dogs learn to look for or are predisposed to look for.

Great Video i really think

Great Video i really think that the intelligence of the dogs is as good as the humans but the obly draback is that they have the intelligence but they dont have the brain to show the right direction i have a which sometimes acts very intellectual and some time acts like a dumb.

Yes I've seen this. I also have used very subtle cues with my dogs where it seems they are listening to my conversation, or just being GREAT dogs by reading my "mind"! LOL, the down cue for my BT is a very small downward movement of my head and a quick look where I want him. I use it to demonstrate how nice it is to not have to use big loud Commands or exaggerated body language. The closed eye trick is pretty funny! I think I could train my dogs to not break their down even if I closed my eyes, because I can turn around where they cannot see my face and not move, but I'm not sure they wouldn't succumb to thievery if a treat was within reach! After all they are opportunists by nature!
I was intrigued by the rather loose way they did the experiments, I would have done it without any food first then food in both cups before I was convinced it was not a trained behavior before the trial. Since the dogs nose is so powerful.
But I do believe dogs are getting much better at adapting to us. Therefore Smarter by our standards? Also certain breeds are even more able to figure out things for themselves, if they haven't be squashed by bad training.
Happy NEW YEAR everyone! I almost forgot!
