Aidan Interviewed by Dog-Training-Tutorial.com
Rodrigo Trigosso, editor and webmaster of Dog-Training-Tutorial.com recently interviewed Aidan Bindoff, the editor of Positive Petzine. Here is an extract of that interview which you can find here.
RT: In your opinion, what is the real advantage of clicker training over traditional training? Do you think "dog-friendly" is enough reason to move from traditional training to clicker dog training?
AB: I think it is. If you have several methods that all work, why not pick the one that is the most fun for both dog and owner? But then, I had an early training experience which made that abundantly clear to me. If I had trained other dogs successfully with traditional training and had happy, willing workers I would be less inclined to make the switch.
I think anyone who owns a dog or wants to train dogs should learn about behavior. It doesn't matter how you train, you avoid so much superstition, dogma and trial-and-error if you learn about learning and behavior. When you learn about behavior, you can make informed decisions. You worry less about what other people tell you to do and just get on and do something because it makes sense.
RT: What would be the most common myths about clicker dog training?
AB: There are so many, where to begin? There are myths amongst clicker trainers and myths amongst everyone else.
Perhaps if we just looked at behavior and the various ways we can change behavior without looking at the sub-cultures within dog training, there would be fewer myths? Affiliation tends to make us irrational.
